Sporting excellence
I read, re-read and will read again "Into the sunset" (September 24) captivated not only by the sporting excellence of Schumacher, Agassi and Navratilova but also by the felicity of Rohit Brijnath's language in his tribute to the three great sporting icons of our time, which appropriately was featured on the first page. While I understand his view that "the fans are not poorer for their retirement, but richer that they came at all", as an aficionado of all the three greats, I feel the fans are poorer for their retirement for there is no knowing when such great stars will reappear.

Surely, the sporting arenas will be impoverished by the retirement of the extraordinary trinity of Andre Agassi, Martina Navratilova and Michael Schumacher. Hats off to these iconic heroes, who left an indelible imprint in the minds of their fans. Their exploits will inspire generations of sportspersons.

The decision of Agassi, Navratilova and Schumacher to retire in a blaze of glory should be applauded. Rarely do people at the top retire. It is better to retire when people are asking "Why?" instead of waiting until they ask "Why not?"Surely there is a lesson in this for some of our sportspersons.
