Question of pardon

With reference to "To pardon or not" (Literary Review, November 5), the author should be complimented for the excellent article on whether Afzal is to be pardoned or not. In the case of death sentence, clemency or reprieve may be just when the abettor of the crime is mentally deranged or retarded or the crime committed is unintentional. But pardon or clemency will be meaningless if the abettor mentally arranged to commit the crime.
