Do away with squints

DR. T.S. SURENDRAN

Botox has been in vogue from the 1980s and is a fairly safe drug.

BOTOX is a simple non-surgical injection administered by a qualified medical doctor to treat certain forms of Squint, Blepharo spasm, Hemifacial spasms,

Frown lines, Migraine, Wrinkles on forehead, Crow's feet and Crocodile tears. Botox has been in vogue from the 1980's and is a fairly a safe drug and is the latest for Facial Rejuvenation and is an FDA approved drug.

Botox blocks the muscle's activity and the muscle does not contract and wrinkles are not seen. In the treatment of wrinkles, Botox does not worsen the condition even when discontinued and the effect lasts for approximately three to six months. Treatment is simple and has minimal risk and can be considered as a miracle drug.

The doctor should be able to judge and ascertain the required dose and have knowledge of possible side effects and experience.

What is the patient expected to know? Botox is usually stored in a refrigerator and is available as 50 to 100 units. Usually patients may require approximately from 10 units to 50 units.

Procedure

Most of the patients are injected in the outpatient clinic with skin being cleansed with antiseptic solution and injection points identified by the doctor. Minor modifications may be made according to the patient's needs. The procedure is done with very fine hypodermic needles and pain is minimal — lasts for a few seconds and is similar to a mosquito bite.

Post- injection care is simple and patients can return to work preferably after three to four hours.

The results are not instantaneous and may take a couple of days to weeks and the peak usually is after four weeks. The injection has to be repeated every four months approximately.

No side effects

There are practically no side effects except minimal pruritic bumps that settle in a couple of hours.

In rare cases, there can be drooping of the lid. In cases of essential blepharospasm, where the injection is given in the lids specially the upper lid, occasionally flu-like symptoms are noticed.

Rarely there may not be any visible results after the injection and it may be repeated in such cases. Patients are requested to come back for repeat injection after a couple of months once the symptoms recur.

Botox methodology is applicable for certain types of squints but not for all types.
