Lowkey launch

IN a city given to excesses, the launch of WILLIAM DALRYMPLE'S latest book was relatively low key. But that did not deter the author or his fans. Dalrymple sought to clarify that The Last Mughal was "not historical, political or social." He said, "I would not like to categorise the book. It involves all three aspects of life of the Mughal emperor." Admitting that it was difficult to draw a true picture of events historically given that the same event could be interpreted differently, it was increasingly necessary to safeguard against letting "history be used as a political tool". Dalrymple felt that it was necessary not to promote hate and discord specially with young students. "Keep the language as neutral as possible," said he, adding that when children are older they should be allowed to draw their own conclusions.
