Hits and misses

The writer of "Illusions of an Oscar" (December 24) hasn't got the facts correct. "Black" (2005) and "Swades" (2004) weren't sent as India's official entry for the Academy Awards. So where is the question of "Swades" losing to "The Sea Inside" and "Black" to "Tsotsi"? The closest miss for India at the Oscars was not Mira Nair's "Salaam Bombay" (1988) but Mehboob Khan's timeless epic "Mother India" (1957), which lost the award by a single vote in the final poll to "Nights of Caberria".
