Avoid self-medication
This has reference to "Do not doctor yourself" (January,14). Medical Associations at national, State and district levels should educate through the media on the dangers of self-medication and pharmacist-prescribed medicines. Some doctors prescribe several medicines with the same effect, which adds to the expense. This drives the patients to turn to pharmacies avoiding physicians when a similar illnesss occurs.

The article was a timely reminder to bury this habit. People decide for themselves and prescribe their own dose without knowing the repercussions. Even a headache could be a symptom for a disease and thus recurring instances should be referred to a doctor. We need to think hard before we go in for self-medication.

Most people are uninformed about the dangers of self-medication. They think it is a cost and time-saving alternative to visiting the doctors. Even the chemists sell the drugs without any prescription to make money. The media should play a major role in creating awareness among the people regarding self-medication.
