Prejudices of race

Vikram Kapur's "Extreme prejudices"(January 28) does open our eyes to the extreme prejudices that still persist in the U.K. And he took the correct decision when he took a stand to fight it in his own way and get his Ph.D, which was his right. But can Shilpa Shetty's `act' be viewed in the same light? She has now become the winner in the celebrity show and says that this is India's victory too. What precisely has India won here? She now says that she has never ever been subjected to racial prejudice, it was all `a bit of misunderstanding'.

It appears that developed nations are yet to imbibe truly humane qualities honouring universalism. The racist remarks hurled at Shilpa are indicative of Britishers' inability to honour the traits of modernity despite living in an ultra-modern society. It's time for the Indians to stop moulding their patterns of living in flawed Western colours.

Some people in the West still think that India is a land of snake charmers and sadhus. The aversion to colour used to be very high in the past. I had a bitter experience in London's Kew Gardens a few years ago. An elderly gentleman introduced himself and started talking to me. He was of the opinion that we Indians knew nothing. Even after so many years, the mindset of some people hasn't changed. We cannot generalise of course, but the British media correctly said that, through Goody, the world has come to know the other side of the British.

."Ground realities" (January 28) brings out the basic issue related to the reality TV show. The superior race syndrome advocated by white-skinned people is an outdated belief and in the modern era Asians are proving to be as good as them, if not better, in many fields. In any case racial superiority is hardy a subject that can achieve popular support except probably in TV shows to achieve momentary entertainment value.
