SIGHTINGS

Fight HIV

IF Hollywood actor RALPH FIENNES were to tour the slums of Mumbai on his own, he wouldn't draw any more attention than the usual foreign tourist. But the fact that Fiennes, currently Unicef UK ambassador, was seen tagging along with Bollywood's Sharmila Tagore did draw large crowds who stopped to listen. Fiennes, while speaking about the hurdles that confront agencies working with HIV-positive cases, said that one of the key issues that needed to be addressed in India and other countries was " the removal of the social stigma around the disease and its spread". He said, "The main stumbling block was the taboo around sex and discussing sex that acts as a hurdle towards sensitising people against HIV/AIDS." Fiennes felt that if there could be a shift in society's views about sex and people were more open about issues relating to it; then perhaps it would be easier for agencies to curtail the spread of the disease.
