SIGHTINGS
On books
KIRAN DESAI is still not used to her new star status or, for that matter, whirlwind tours. She remains essentially what she is, soft-spoken, easy with her laugh and incredibly gentle. The youngest-ever Booker winner, who was in Mumbai to read from her book The Inheritance Of Loss, insists, "Writing does not come from simply being happy. That would make a really bad book. There has to be something more to it than that." Desai adds that, in any case, this is not a good time for her to be thinking about writing since she is on the move. "Instead I'm catching up on my reading." Desai admits that, with her win, she has many "more friends now. But it's the originals who really have always been there for me," said she. While she is pretty content to bask in the adulation she is getting, Desai is keen to get back to work. Asked if it would be a long time for her to begin the next book, she smiles and quips, " I'm not worried about the actual writing. Of course if I write a bad book I will be depressed but actually I'm longing to getting back to it all."
