Startling theory
SUCHITRA BEHAL
IF the title of the book makes you sit up and think; the thesis propounded by first-time author TUSHAR GANDHI about the "murder conspiracy" that lead to his grandfather's death, is even more startling. Recalling the events of the last four years of Gandhi's life, Tushar, at the release of his book, Let's Kill Gandhi said, "Though there are many books on Bapu's life, I have attempted to write on his death and the last four years of his life." He added that it was very important for him to write this book so that the misconceptions surrounding the cause of Gandhi's assassination are dispersed. In his book, Tushar has said that there was a huge conspiracy surrounding Gandhi's death. Giving an idea of how some people hated Gandhi, he said, "Ten days before the murder, the Delhi and Bombay police had an intimation of the murder conspiracy but no one did anything about it. The Kapur Commission, set up to investigate Gandhi's killing, mentioned that on January 30, 1948, theMahatma was assassinated at 17 minutes past 5.00 p.m. in New Delhi, but in Pune handbills stating `Bapu has been assassinated' were circulated since 2.30 in the afternoon. This shows the scale of conspiracy and not an emotional outburst on the part of Godse," said Tushar. He added that some allege that it was because of Gandhi that Partition took place "but the fact is that he was the first to oppose it."
