Print popularity

The dwindling news value of the print media in the West has been well brought out in "Broadsheet story" (February 18). The story is gradually becoming applicable to India as well; with a multitude of TV channels telecasting news round-the-clock in addition to channels wholly devoted to news. Of late the news value of even TV channels is being replaced by the headlines appearing on the monitor of the computer. With the older forms being slowly phased out, the print medium will have to look for alternate sources to enhance its popularity.

Capt. O.B. Nair,
Poonithura, Kerala

It is true that each new generation consumes less news than the last one. The reasons may be many, but one that is quite strong is that there is a systematic degeneration of values from one generation to another. It appears that there is no way to stop or arrest this phenomenon.
