Civic sense

"The great garbage rush" by Kalpana Sharma (February 25) shows the appreciable civic sense of the people of Charkop, which we seldom see. While we are careful about keeping our houses neat and tidy we never bother about the surroundings and common passages. The people's irresponsible attitude on keeping a clean environment in our nation is highly deplorable and the law enforcers are quite lax on this.

V. Pandy,
Tuticorin

Charkop is not the only area where tenements have kept the place neat. Ten years ago, in places like Meera Road and Nallasapora the slum dwellers kept their area sparkling clean. The civic authorities need to be proactive and devise a mechanism for garbage disposal. Prevention is better than cure and the authorities should have a clear strategy and implement them. This is true of cities like Chennai too.

Dr. S.S. Venkata Subramanian,
Chennai
