Criminalisation of politics

"Dangers to look out for" by Shashi Tharoor (March 18), is a well-timed article. It shows the problems faced by India at present. The fact that criminal cases are pending against 100 out of 543 MPs of the Lok Sabha is shocking. We should have a law so that such people cannot become MPs.

A. Ibrahim,
N. Parur, Kerala

Shashi Tharoor is right in saying that "criminalisation" of politics is one of the grave dangers to the future growth of our country. Since Independence more and more criminals have managed to get themselves into our institutions and law making bodies, including the Parliament. Therefore, "clean" politicians cutting across party lines must come together to ensure things do not become worse. It is in their own interest and for their own self-preservation that they must wake up to the danger.

S.K. Sonpar,
