A safer planet

The article "For a mine-free planet" (April 1) was informative. Mines are maiming and killing many around the world, and with just a misstep! Governments round the world should come forward and work in unison to make this planet a safer place. This humanitarian convention needs to be universalised and should not lag behind for lack of funds.

* * *

Landmines continue to pose a danger to innocent civilians. Landmines that the Russians left in the 1980s are still being found in Afghanistan. In Africa, the worst affected, are peasants looking for food, water and firewood. International organisations must help those disabled by them. We must make a world without landmines.
