Consumerist cinema

This refers to "In search of a new face" by Ziya us Salam (April 8). Ultimately, cinema cannot remain immune from the milieu and the spirit of the times. In its preoccupation with the worship of Mammon, the country seems to have lost its very soul. No wonder then that it is the well fed, westernised and consumerist India that dominates our cinema. An Adoor here or a Govind Nihalini there may once in a while show us what cinema is about. But, the fact remains that the average educated Indian is happy lapping up Karan Johar fare. And therein lies our misfortune.
