Great significance

I was very impressed with Bill Kirkman’s “Changing attitudes”, which spoke about the hazards of smoking and the mixed reactions from people to the ban on smoking in public places. It is a pleasant surprise to note that Kirkmans were non-smokers. It is also interesting that he kept cigarettes in his house to offer to visitors and kept an ashtray for the use and convenience of his smoking students.

Simple language and amazing lucidity enhance the charm of Bill Kirkman’s article on smoking, a topic that has assumed great significance in recent times. The allusions made by him in this context to the former British Prime Ministers, Winston Churchill and Harold Wilson, besides the reference to the situations in his own family and office were interesting to read. Written at a time when ban on smoking in public places is being imposed by various states in India, this article will have a good impact on those who have not given up smoking.
