Commendable practice

This refers to “Tradition in transition” (June 3).The mass community marriages in Bikaner deserve to be appreciated for driving home the message of simplicity and austerity. That the community has steadfastly held on to the practice from 1487 is indeed commendable. In these days of crass commercialisation and pomp and extravagance, such ventures come as a whiff of fresh air. The younger generation has a lot to learn from this practice. What is all the more admirable is that despite changing times the Pushkarna brahmins still try to maintain the ritual though the number of marriages has come down considerably.
