At Café Samovar

SUCHITRA BEHAL

When restaurateur Usha Khanna launched her book on the making of her restaurant café, Samovar, it was but natural for the city’s glitterati and litterati to be present. Samovar is a popular part of Mumbai’s art skyline, so it was not a total surprise when actor AMITABH BACHCHAN, who was asked to read from the book, said, “Samovar was a great place to go to. Because as a struggler, you found solace in the company of fellow strugglers. And woke the next morning ready to struggle again.”

Needless to say, Bachchan and his baritone voice mesmerised the audience. But it was wife Jaya who let the cat out of the bag when she added that her first date with Bachchan was at the Café Samovar. “We were in Colaba and he had bought kolapuri chappals. We then went to Samovar where he paid the bill.” Bachchan nodded, adding, “This was the only place to be at.”
