Who is insane?

This refers to the article “Why Pooja got mad” (July 15). The protest walk by Pooja Chauhan reveals the plight of women. When Mahatma Gandhi protested, we appreciated and joined him. But, when poor Pooja protested, society jeers and asks ‘is she mad’? Both the state and society have failed to grant her the basic human right ‘to live with dignity’. It is not Pooja’s shame, but ours. We, as members of society, have failed to emancipate and empower women. The paradox is that, on one hand, we are trying to elect a woman president and, on the other, we turn a deaf ear to a woman like Pooja.

B.S. Selvakumar,

Vellore

This incident should have created an avalanche in the mind of society which apparently cries for bahu beti. The victim is not mad but our society is deaf and dumb except when it comes to money. You cannot count the number of girls being forced to take their lives because of dowry.

Nupur Goyal,

Karnal
