Rise of the bahu

SUCHITRA BEHAL

SMITA THACKERAY, known largely as a social activist and more recently a filmmaker, has decided to give politics the go ahead. Announcing this recently, Thackeray said that she felt the time was ripe for her foray into politics. “I want to join politics for the right reasons. Today our country requires good leadership. I am a powerful woman and this feeling comes from my inner confidence.” Thackeray, Shiv Sena supremo, Bal Thackeray’s bahu, clarified that she woul d “naturally” follow the same ideology as the Sena. “I believe in the ideology of my father-in-law and his leadership. I have received several offers from other political parties but prefer to be with the family,” said Thackeray. About her role as a filmmaker, Thackeray clarified: “Film making is not a business for me. I promised myself that I will spot talent and make them stars. That is a challenge and that is what I have done.”
