A niche for Ayesha Dharkar

SUCHITRA BEHAL

When she was young she didn’t want to be known for roles that had her running around trees singing. And, as they say, luck favours the brave. Actor AYESHA DHARKAR, one of the few who have been as successful in Hollywood as Bollywood, is in town to complete a film by Manish Acharya.

“When I was growing up I didn’t have any ambitions to be a conventional heroine.. I have never avoided Bollywood but I was offered different roles initially and have managed to carve a niche for myself. I don’t really think I am a forerunner for crossovers. I mean there is Ismail Merchant who made 40 films and won 13 Oscars — I think it’s difficult to top that. But I have been lucky to have been offered off beat roles that interested me and suited my abilities,” said Dharkar.

She added that she would love to explore doing films like “Chak De”, “Omkara” and “Metro”. “I would love to work on such films. But I wouldn’t mind running around trees a bit now, considering I’ve had a measure of success with off beat roles,” said the dimunitive Dharkar.
