Fight for democracy

Nirupama Subramanian’s interview with Asma Jehangir “We have to remain the watchdogs” (September 9) brings to light the complex political situation prevailing in Pakistan. When the people of Pakistan are ready to fight the military junta, political parties have failed to understand the ground reality. Ms. Jehangir is right in her criticism of Benazir Bhutto who wants to negotiate with the military rulers, instead of leading the people in their fight for democracy.

Asma Jehangir is absolutely right about the military’s negative role in Pakistan’s political affairs. A Pakistani POW in the Eastern Scetor in 1972 told me that the biggest difference between his country and ours was that the Indian Army had shown no inclination to dabble in politics. This, he said, ensured that democracy prevailed in India.
