Let’s go cycling

“The latest French revolution” (September 9) made interesting reading. Cycling is eco-friendly and healthy. In China too, many people use cycles as a means of conveyance. Cycling should be given prominence in India too. Awareness campaigns coupled with incentives will help the cause.

The article was inspirational. This latest French revolution has sent a message to the world that cycling is good for both the individual as well as to the environment. To tackle burning issues like global warming, there are two choices: to opt for a mass public transport system or for individual but eco-friendly modes like the bicycle. Hope that Indians too make such environmentally- sensitive choices in the future.

The comeback of the bicycle in France reminds me of the use of bicycles in the Infosys Campus in Mysore, which I visited two years back. The company keeps a number of bicycles at different locations for use by residents. There are no charges. One can take a bicycle from the nearest spot, reach the destination point, and deposit it at a nearby stand. In that campus it works very fine. Such free service is not possible in a town. The Paris model is its paid version. That model could be a good idea that can be tried here. I wish some young management graduate embarks upon such ventures.

It was a pleasure to know that after creating the world’s fastest mode of transport the TGV, the French are now returning to the environmentally and socially sensitive bicycle. Time is cyclic, they say, and it’s high time the megacities start thinking on the same lines. This way we can develop a healthy and environment friendly world.
