Uplifting rural poor

The two articles “Change from within” and “Building a bleak future” bring out the contrast in two sets of children. With over 75 per cent of the Indian population being below the poverty line, the Government’s efforts alone cannot improve conditions. In Coimbatore, a set of dedicated people are exerting themselves to improve children’s lives through education. At Meerut, the young of migrant labourers are exploited in brick kilns. In the process, these children lose out on schooling and their childhood. While millionaires turn trillionaires, the poor continue to be neglected due to faulty planning and implementation of Government programmes.

Harish Tyagi has raised a developmental issue worth investigating. Many policies and legislations have been introduced to protect children and improve their status. Still our country remains the largest example of a nation plagued by the problem of child labour. Estimates of ILO (International Labour Organisation) shows that in India 11.2 million child labourers are concentrated mainly in the unorganised sector. Collective action from the government, voluntary organisations, public and the media is the only way to put an end to this practice and bring back the lost childhood to the growing pillars of our nation.

It is disstressing thst even after 60 years of independance,we have failed to put an end to issues like illiteracy, child labour, malnutrition, lack of access to basic amenities. The solution is not to blame the government; we the people, being the part of the system, must assume some social-responsibility. We need a movement that will involve the entire country in eradicating such evils. The people of India should cleanse the system by setting themselves up as an example
