SUCHITRA BEHAL
From drug dealing to rap. A long journey in a short time seems to be the story of Curtis James Jackson aka 50 CENT who was in Mumbai recently. His current attitude belies the stories of violence and bizzare after-performance parties but 50 Cent is not perturbed. He’s seen it all; been there done that.
He feels he should have “done India sooner”; he’s impressed with the women — “they are beautiful” —but won’t commit to casting any in his future videos. His calloused hands and numerous tattoos put him in a league of his own.
Sure he’s seen prison life but then that hasn’t spoilt him. “I’ve learnt a lot from life and I guess, sometimes, you have to hit a real low to get to the top,” he shrugs. And what about the time he was shot at nine times? “That was bad,” said 50 Cent by way of explanation.
His true mentors are Michael Jackson — “I’m overwhelmed by the images and fusion element his music has” — to Eminem who actually signed him up with his record label.
What he really wanted to do was sing with Robbie Williams but “that can’t happen right now because he’s gone to rehab.” Meanwhile 50 Cent’s happy to keep the charts rocking.
