Daddy dearest
SUCHITRA BEHAL
He considers himself a “lucky man”, more so because he has two daughters to whom he has passed on a musical legacy. PANDIT RAVI SHANKAR, who was in Pune recently to perform there after a gap of 19 years with his daughter Anoushka, has not
hing but praise for her and her half-sister, Norah Jones.
On Anoushka, the sitar maestro considered her his “best disciple. She is extremely talented and has the same creative energy that I had. I foresee her, apart from classical music, playing many more innovative creations.”
And Norah is no less. “She is a extremely talented musician and her voice does something to me. I am a very lucky man to have two such wonderful daughters.”
Even at 87, he keeps himself active not only by performing but also teaching and reading. He said he was now working on writing a sitar concerto, which is to be ready by 2008 and will get Anoushka to perform too.
Panditji wants to pass on his legacy to her “the legacy of our music through the sitar,” said he.
