Difficult books

Swaha Das and Hari Nair in “The art of difficult writing” (December 30) have appropriately pointed out the misery of readers on not being well-read and the publishers making money out of it. I, myself have gone through pocket-sized thin books, the so-called Very Short Introductions (Oxford Press) on Marxism, Socialism etc. and the triviality of such fragmentary information is evident. Having read works of Joseph Conrad and Lawrence, I cannot but identify with the writer’s feeling of joy on having understood these texts.
