Low key writer
SUCHITRA BEHAL
Unlike the new crop of writers, MANIL SURI is not into publicity. This was more than evident when he toured the city almost incognito to promote his new book.
In a low key launch Suri spoke about the book, its plot and what got him to writing it. The book, which spans from before independence to date, is “entirely fictional” but the writer admits, “I would not have been able to write any of this if my family members had not shared details of the Partition, of India during that break or after it.”
While he admits that he let his “imagination take over” he is candid enough to realise that he has had to rely heavily on personal narratives.
Seven years after he published his first book, Suri, a mathematics professor who once said he wrote to avoid boredom, does not agree that his books work on a formula. “In fact, they are based on the history of the country.” He said he does not write for a western audience and insists that all his work is rooted for those who are interested in the culture and history of India.
Already at work on the final part of the triology, Suri adds that he’s still looking for an appropriate title.
