True role model
“The greening of Paris” (February 3) was highly informative. Paris has become a role model to other cities in the world having received an award for the discipline it has undergone in transport system. Major cities cause air pollution due to the public transport system and toxic emission from industrial units in their suburbs. While the measures adopted by Denis Baupin and Eric Britton cannot be implemented in other cities, the authorities in power can invite environment enthusiasts and activists to seek their suggestions to minimize the ever increasing pollution caused by public transport systems. Otherwise the “Bali Summits” and other such will be ornamental only.

That Paris received The World Sustainable Transportation Award recognising the efforts to make public transportation greener should be an eye-opener. Since buses and cars are the main source of carbon emission, the Paris model of discouraging use of cars by limiting parking space, encouraging car-sharing, creating exclusive cycle paths with the free-to-use bicycles is worthy of consideration. Our city planners and administrators may take a lead from this and introduce such schemes in select areas of some cities on an experimental basis.
