Naming games

V. Gangadhar, in an otherwise interesting article (“Flavours of the past”, February 3), missed out on the peculiarities of the names prevalent in Punjab, where Amarjit, Paramjeet, Gurpreet, Jaswinder, Rupinder etc. are used for men and women. For instance, cricketer-turned-politician Navjyot Singh Sidhu’s better half bears the same name. The only distinguishing feature is that men’s names are followed by Singh and women’s by Kaur.
