A pragmatic action plan

This refers to Kalpana Sharma’s “Sorry, a powerful word” (Febraury 24). The act of separating children from their mothers is undoubtedly brutal and should be censured by all. But as far as the matter of Adivasi children of India is concerned, the idea as well as the endeavours of bringing them into the mainstream should meet with approbation. We cannot let them live in their own world just to preserve their indigenous sentiment and history. They are a part of this country and supposed to play an active role in the vicissitudes of our nation. For this they need to be well civilised in all aspects.

Sulekha Kushwah,
Damanjodi, Orissa

Kalpana Sharma aptly states “Sadly in India, our indigenous people (Tribals) remain largely invisible and mostly ignored until they organise and resist.” The hash reality is that our Tribals are the lowest of low and the poorest of the poor. The extreme paucity of skill, knowledge and enterprise leaves them unable to reap the fruits of our development. We need a pragmatic action plan to alleviate their suffering.

S.V.K. Chandran,
Thiruvananthapuram

Correction: The photograph of Paul Theroux published along with the article “Road less travelled” (February 24) should have been credited to William Furniss and not as published. The error is regretted.
