Worthy of emulation
Apropos of Neeta Deshpande’s “Living with Dignity” (February 24), There are no words to describe the sincere endeavour of Baba Amte who provided a ray of hope for innumerable discarded and much-reviled people. He leaves behind a legacy, worth emulating.

Neeta Despande’s article revealed how Anandwan has been a haven for the disabled and diseased. The fact that inmates are taught to sustain themselves by engaging in productive activities does away with self-pity and instils self-confidence and courage. Anandwan’s growth reflects Baba Amete’s indefatigable spirit. His mantras “Work builds and charity destroys” and “Give them a chance, not charity” are worthy of emulation. His biography should be included in textbooks so that students learn the value of serving society.
