FITNESS MATTERS

When the rubber hits the road

RAHUL VERGHESE

Now that you’ve started running, ease yourself into it gradually. Here’s how to do it.

Keep a brief log to record how you feel every day so that you can reflect on your physical and psychological highs and lows.

Best way to health:Keep yourself motivated.

I hope I’ve managed to convince you about why running is good for you, and perhaps you have even got yourself a pair of shoes that is well suited to your feet.

Now is when we’ve got to get started, perhaps you already have. Congratulations!

Things to remember

Go for a check up with your doc if you are over 40, before starting off.

Measure various health related parameters like weight, cholesterol and sugar.

Set yourself a goal. To be able to run 500m or one km non stop, or to be able to run five days a week, or to feel more energised, whatever YOU decide.

Ease into your running schedule gradually. Warm up, run, cool down, stretch.

Commit yourself to a seven-week programme. If you are already running, you may want to challenge yourself a bit. Check out some world renowned training programmes for varied goals at http://www.runningandliving.com/

Give yourself a lot of positive self-talk, especially in the first two weeks when the urge to quit is very high.

Perhaps team up with another person so that you both end up encouraging and pushing each other.

It would be ideal to keep a brief log to record how you feel every day so that you can reflect on your physical and psychological highs and lows, so that over time you get to know your body well, and you become your own best coach.

A quote from Arthur Ashe, a great tennis player of the 1970’s will help keep you going, “Success is a journey, not a destination. The doing is usually more important than the outcome.”

Outcome

In fact you will be amazed by the outcome seven weeks later when you take your health measures once again and also plot how you feel along the varied health and non-health benefits I had listed in the first two articles which appeared earlier.

Happy Running! It’s the most eco-friendly way to travel.
