Sadaf Siddique in his article “Dollars and desis” ( June 8 ) very correctly described the mindset of many of our people who go to the U.S., to make money, run for cheapness. They have the habit of converting dollars to rupees. It is the same with visitors like us who get a shock while out there in the malls. I was shocked to see a single stem of “Karivepatta” cost a dollar, which is actually Rs. 40. In Canada , unlike the U.S., there are not many garage sales. There, the owners put the articles out in the corridors or outside for the poorer sections and the unemployed to take them. We should equate the dollar with a rupee in mind. A loaf of bread could then cost Rs. 120!
