'Hooked for life'

Yoga transforms the mind, body and soul in unique ways, says Shilpa Shetty.

I started practising yoga after I got afflicted with cervical spondylosys during weight training; and got hooked to it for life. I have always been into fitness since I was a black-belt in karate but yoga, I have realised over time, makes you fit for a lifetime, and that too not just physically but also mentally. It transforms the mind, body and soul, with unique ways, builds up the stamina and helps a practitioner get revitalised while discovering inner peace. It is also known to reduce stress and help release pent-up tension; increase energy and vitality, help in losing weight, along with improving blood circulation and digestion — apart from help curing aliments like blood pressure, arthritis, even heart trouble. I have been practising ashtanga yoga with breathing techniques daily for the past four years now and have taken intensive training from yoga trainers Shiv Kumar Mishra and Vinayak Dixit for some time to perfect my asanas since in yoga, to gain the maximum benefit, it is necessary to be as perfect in all postures as possible.

I’m feted for having a near-perfect physique, for which I give maximum credit to yoga — it has toned my body like nothing else could. But more than that, yoga has helped me get a lot of mental peace and inner calm, which is more essential for me.

I’d say yoga is a management system and the most holistic approach to life that I have ever come across. It strengthens, tones and cures. It works on body, mind and soul and it has had a spectacular impact on my life.
