IN PASSING

In a new role

BY SUCHITRA BEHAL

Cricketer Anil Kumble is ready to notch up yet another distinction to his well- feathered cap. Kumble who, at 37, made news and history by being appointed captain for the Indian Test side, is now donning the grease paint as the lead actor in a film. Titled “Meerabai Not Out”, the film has Kumble playing himself. “The film revolves around cricket, so I’m essentially playing myself. That’s why I was ready to do the film,” says Kumble. He said the film was about a cricket-crazy maths teacher who lives, eats and breathes cricket. Kumble is somehow connected to this lady and her mind and whenever she thinks about him or cricket, he gets hiccups. Kumble’s co-actor is none other than actor Mandira Bedi, better known for her noodle straps than cricket some time ago. Ever the gentleman, Kumble says that fans across the world react differently to celebrities. “Some don’t believe it, others get excited. I find their initial reaction very interesting,” says he.
