Sterling performance
This refers to the interview with Waheeda Rahman by Reshma S. Kulkarni (August 17). She danced her way into the hearts of film lovers of yesteryears through her breezy appearance in the Telugu movie “Rozalu Maraayee” and made her royal entry into Bollywood as a matter of right which she retained by her sterling performances in many memorable movies, “Guide” with Dev Anand being one. Opinions may differ as to who stole the show, whether Waheeda Rahman or Dev Anand, but the fact remains that Waheeda did comport herself with ease and charm handling the role of Rosie, creditable for a new comer to the Hindi filmdom from a non Hindi region opposite an established matinee idol of several summers. It is a pity her considerable dancing talent was not fully exploited by the filmmakers of her days.

Reshma Kulkarni’s tête-À-tête with Waheeda Rahman (August 17) made interesting reading. Famous for her graceful acting, Waheeda Rahman could have said a word or two about her mentor and the great actor Guru Dutt, who in the black-and-white magic “Pyaasa” brought the real talent of Waheeda Rahman to the forefront and after that film, she never looked back.
