IN PASSING

Vote for change

Shah Rukh Khan is not given to pretence. His way, in most conversations, has been simple and direct. In the aftermath of Mumbai’s terror strikes, Khan feels that the best way he can alleviate some of the fear and bleakness that has settled in p eople’s lives is by entertaining them. “That is what I am best at. May be this is not the best time for a movie release, but I leave everything in the hands of god,” said Khan. “As an actor my job is to make people smile, offer them solace to forget all this for a few hours.”

But at the same time Khan is realistic enough to gauge the mood of people and accepts that he, like everybody else, is hoping that something constructive emerges out of all this anger. “It is sad that change has to emerge this way, but at least the process has begun.” Khan repudiated the terrorists’ stand and said that terrorism had no religion. “Every religion is good, every language is communicative. But importantly we must change ourselves first to effect any change in the world. Let us use the power invested in us as people to vote for a change. Give one party which is secular a chance at governance. Alliances are insecure because they always have to worry about the numbers,” he said.

Flying high

She is the “most downloaded actor” on the Net. But perhaps that is no longer a surprise for her. Suddenly she is tinsel town’s new heartthrob, whom almost everyone wants to sign up. But Katrina Kaif will not let that go to her head.

Even when she heard that she had been voted as the “sexiest woman” by Asian magazine in the U.K., Kaif tilted her head in response but cautioned, ‘it’s me this year. Maybe next time round I’ll be down two notches. Though it is lovely to be considered ‘sexy’ I wouldn’t let that go to my head. I guess sexy is just another adjective when people like you and I take it as a compliment,” said she.

Would she say that finally her time has come? “Well in this industry one day you are a few notches up and the next day a few down. I’d take it all in my stride because its all part of the process.” Ata girl, that’s the way to go.

Still a hit

At 86, he can still draw the crowds. Actor Dilip Kumar, said the “greatest gift that his wife Saira Banu had ever given was herself. I couldn’t have asked for anything more than her companionship and affection.” An actor who was onc e offered a role with David Lean, Dilip Kumar, who subsequently refused it, said he was “content with whatever he was doing here. I was happy with my success and never wanted any more. I met David lean several times and we shared a great rapport.” He also cannot decide on any one role that he has played as a favourite. “Once I agreed to play a certain role, I gave it all and it took precedence over everything else. There are no favourites, simply because each role challenged me equally,” said he.
