Commercialisation of media

This has reference to “Whose media? Which people?” by Nissim Mannathukkaren (December 21). The electronic media failed to react in a responsible way during the Mumbai attacks. It sums up the limited agendas of present age media that seems to prefer commercial interests over humane interests. I fail to understand why the media is so interested in treating everything as saleable?

The article truly portrayed the increasing commercialisation of the media. It is true that the media only highlights news that evoke considerable interest among the viewers and is not bothered about the ideals of democracy or the death of ‘insignificant’ persons. But we shouldn’t forget that part of the blame is with us. It is we the people who have commercialised the media. If only the news and other channels highlight issues like poverty, hunger and such other things prevalent in each and every corner of the world, will anyone watch the reports and appreciate them? There’s a need for us to change too..

Home is best

This has reference to the article “Full circle” by Sofia Ghori Saleem (December 21). The author has remarked that India is witnessing reverse migration today, thanks to its phenomenal growth in recent years. There cannot be an iota of doubt on the view that India is fast becoming a lucrative business hub, and foreigners throng the country for personal and business purposes. But the million dollar question remains: Has the much-talked about “global village” improved the life of Indian farmers? The answer is, of course, a firm “No”. But probably they too will say “East or West, home is best”.

Pernicious practice

This refers to “Childhood interrupted” (December 21) by Visa Ravindran. Children, who are supposed to be playing at that age are forced to occupy the marriage altar. Although child marriage is punishable, yet it is taking place surreptitiously in violation of the law. The powers that be do not seem to have taken cognizance of the practice, let alone put an end to it for extraneous reasons.

H.P. Murali
Bengaluru

It is sad to learn that child marriages are still taking place in the remote corners of the country. The police should spring into action and nab the perpetrators of child marriages and bring them to book. Children are God’s messengers of hope for mankind. They should not be subjected to early marriages. Surely, child marriages are the bane of India.

K. Pradeep
Chennai

Responsible parents are sure to admit that thrusting adulthood mercilessly on childhood is not only a social evil, but also an act as sinful as committing infanticide. That only a few child marriages come to light is a bitter fact. Illiteracy is the main factor for child marriages. Besides strict enforcement of the law, creating awareness among the innocent and illiterate parents will bring better results.

Learning from children

“The child is the father of man” by Vijay Nagaswami (December 21) is thought-provoking. In modern life, children do not get as much care and love as they deserve; or if they do, not in the desirable way. Many couples stay together thanks to their children. Apart from this bridging role, children give the couple a sense of direction. The author is right when he says children make the parents better human beings. In fact, child- rearing is a serious responsibility which ensures the preservation of values and relationships. Parents owe a lot to their children and vice versa.
