IN PASSING

Stage mania

SUCHITRA BEHAL

“My ideas are my strength but they are also my weakness,” confesses playwright Makrand Deshpande, preparing for rehearsals for his new play “Kavita Bhaag Jayege”. For Deshpande, reality and imagination continue to collide and often he is disconcerted at having to rein in one to make way for the other. With “Kavita…” too it was the same. “The day we began rehearsals the terror strikes began,” said Deshpande. “The play now makes a reference to loss and the pain of loss. Before that, when I started writing the play, I made references to the linguistic politics but now along with terror, the breaking news syndrome is also something that the play includes.”

Deshpande, who has had his brush with Bollywood (“Makdee” and “Swades”) said he consciously strove to steer clear from the tinsel screen. “In Bollywood, most actors have no meat in the kind of roles they are offered. They are just instruments to take the storyline further. But I have decided to and sacrificed a lot to stay close to the stage.” He admits that his earlier plays bordered on the verge of being more surreal, “but now audiences can comprehend what I have to say a lot more easily.” However for those who love his edginess, a Deshpande play is something that contains more twists and turns than ordinary. It is perhaps this that makes him a playwright to watch out for always.

Success story

Katrina Kaif has finally found stardom. For this actor, the road to stardom was certainly not easy. But, as they say, the times changed and suddenly she found herself a success story beyond her wildest dreams. Having been polled recently as “one of the most rocking personalities”, Kaif said, “It’s sweet and I think if your audience connects with you then half your battle is won.”

While she remains stable with her feet firmly planted on the ground, Kaif said that “success meant moving forward constructively and also making the best of every opportunity given to one. It also, for me, means peace of mind and the security of knowing that you have the support of people.” Her advice to the younger generation: “To succeed you need to have a strong self-belief and be ready to work hard and be sincere about it and yes be grateful, to God, for whatever you manage to achieve.”

Fond father

Here is one star father who is not mincing words. Shekhar Suman, who recently launched a production company that is to produce TV shows and films, has announced that all his productions will feature his son Adhyayan. “Every producer who has an actor-son makes films for him. Rakesh Roshan does so for his son, so do many others, why shouldn’t I?” asks Suman. In fact even at the launch of his production house, Suman said that the company hoped to produce a couple of films by the next year and these would feature his son. Then added, “In fact all my ventures will feature him. Why not?” While the fond father will push his son’s career to the hilt, Adhyayan’s film debut has not been too successful. But, Suman retorts, “The film may not have done too well but his role was noticed and appreciated.” And like all star fathers he is predicting a windfall in 2009. Whether that actually happens or not even the stars cannot foretell.
