Another one gone

M.G. Road, Bangalore will soon be marked by another absence: the landmark Coffee House. A tribute to an institution that has afforded millions some simple pleasures of life…

In a league of its own...

There are several things you can do at 78, M.G. Road in Bangalore on a hot afternoon. Read books, write software programs, construct poetry, converse, or generally while away your time — all of this while sipping hot coffee. This is the location of one of Bangalore’s most famous landmarks, Coffee House. The place where you can get a quick, filling snack served with piping hot coffee, without burning a hole in your pocket.

Exclusive and inexpensive

Coffee House never really competed with the modern coffee shops down the road. It served its exclusive and inexpensive toasts, scrambled eggs, omelettes, and dosas. It never cared if its coffee smelled a little of charcoal fire, or if its cups had stains of a previous drinking ritual. Still, it was really rare to find an empty table at Coffee House.

But this pillar of defiance against modernisation has been slowly crumpling, over the last 50 years. Coffee House has been notified to move out of its current location on M.G. Road by the end of February. While the management intends to resume operations from another location, the staff and regular visitors for over 40 years are feeling a sense of detachment. Some of the staff have tirelessly worked two shifts every day for over two to three decades to run Coffee House. At the new location, they hope to re-establish relationships with customers and wait on people who may want to drink all their coffee at Coffee House from then on.

M.G. Road, Bangalore, however, will never be the same again without Coffee House.
