Glam-mum’s the word

Can motherhood and glamour go together? ‘Yes,’ says the new generation of glamorous moms this Mother’s Day.

Being Mom is the sexiest role I’ve played,” Angelina Jolie confessed after her twins. The world saw her walk the red carpet, at Cannes last year, sporting a bulge like it were a fashion accessory and looking hotter (men say) than she ever did. She sprung back just weeks later with a super hot body plus all the joys of mothering.

Around the same time pop star-mom Gwen Stefani delivered too and was spotted by paparazzi “barely two weeks later” looking gorgeous as ever.

The sexy Halle Berry couldn’t have put it more nicely: “I thought I knew love before, but I never knew anything like this,” she was quoted as saying in an international magazine, post-baby. And we can almost imagine hand on heart, washboard abs looking more than perfect!

Closer home, the story is admirably similar. Our very own glamour moms — in Bollywood, on the ramp, gracing society pages — prove that now more than ever motherhood does not come in the way of looking great or for that matter their careers.

Comeback queens

Not so long ago pregnancies were seldom discussed and being a mother went with a ‘respectable’ but de-glam look, lost opportunities and falling back in the race. Now, the come-back moms took their time to re-emerge but did it with an élan that matched their pre-motherhood charm, measure for measure.

Madhuri Dixit Nene literally danced back into our hearts with “Aaja Nachle” after a long hiatus following the birth of her second son. The film mimicked life since she played a mother while looking enviably fit and always just short of breaking into a dance.

Juhi Chawla’s graceful comeback with “Teen Deewarein” and “Jhankaar Beats” is, to her fans, still the same, “only sweeter, if at all,” says a post on her fan blog. Kajol’s re-entry with “Fanaa” was somewhat similar.


Twinkle Khanna gave up the arc lights for interior design but not looking fab after her son Aarav was born.

“As a person, being a mother has enriched me immensely. As far as my glam image goes, I feel the same as I did before I had Aarav. Like any other parents, Akshay and I take turns to look after him,” she says. And the ‘unbuttoning Akshay’s pants’ act at a recent fashion week has added a notch or two to her hotness factor!

Talking of hot bods, Malaika Arora Khan continues to amaze anybody who looks at her post-pregnancy body. It didn’t take her very long to get back to action — read gyrating to item numbers while sporting a well toned midriff sans stretch marks of course.

Probably the mother of all glamour moms (excuse the pun!) she stands as the most stunning example of springing back with not much time lost. Her fitness mantra to knock off the pregnancy pounds was diet and a strict regimen that saw her gracing haute events after few post partum weeks. She makes springing back post-pregnancy sound like it’s not such a big deal.

Approach matters

And she’s not wrong! Fitness expert Rujuta Diwekar, who got Kareena Kapoor into her size zero figure, reinforces that view. “What helps is a consistent and disciplined approach to diet and fitness all through pregnancy. And of course the attitude that pregnancy shouldn’t be dealt with like a disease!”

So when can a model go back on the ramp post-pregnancy? “I would say almost immediately! Till about a couple of months after the delivery, the body is still adjusting itself to the changes, but losing weight and getting back into shape depends on how well you have taken care of yourself right from day one.”

Ace photographer Daboo Ratnani’s wife, Manisha, who Rujuta is training too, delivered a few weeks ago, “and nobody believes she’s a mom. She looks that gorgeous. She shed most of those extra kilos within a few days of the delivery.”

Rujuta adds that support from home and the comfort of being loved along with good quality sleep go a long way too. Suzanne Roshan had all three when both her sons were born “and in the case of Manisha too, Daboo’s constant support helped her spring back more easily.

“I find women who whip themselves back post-baby terribly sexy,” smiles another ace photographer, Atul Kasbekar. “I quite enjoy photographing glam moms for the added touch of radiance that motherhood brings.” He adds fondly, “More women should be like my wife, who looks amazing even after she had twins!

At the other end of the spectrum are moms like Sonali Bendre, who decided to give it all up for a family rather than adjust her life to accommodate both family and career. But she did spring back to shape “thanks to regular yoga sessions.”

Although soon after the delivery, she did look like she’d had a baby recently, “the extra weight never bothered me. I was always proud of being a mom and it just showed I guess!”

Now that’s a glam mom we are proud of too!
