Claims on a nation

With reference to Sofia Ghori Saleem’s “Imagining a nation” (Magazine, July 26), Indians, Hindus, Muslims and others, desire peaceful co-existence. But problems are created when political parties indulge in pleasing one community or the other for the sake of their vote bank. The people know who the real culprits are.

One of the weaknesses of the Indian Constitution is it is too theoretical and does not codify. The preamble talks about justice, liberty of thought, expression and belief, equality of status and opportunity and promoting fraternity. In practice, all these ideals are mortgaged to the political masters of the day who decide what is justice, liberty, equality and fraternity which is based on the electoral arithmetic of the situation. It is for this reason administrators file cases against adversaries in the interest of public and they withdraw the same again in the interest of public. The concept of socialism was hijacked to allow rule makers to make rules which sometimes even judiciary finds difficult to interpret. It is high time we segregate economics and pure governance.

Moderation is the key

The article “Cut out the killer colas” (Magazine, July 26), gives out a message that cola is nothing but poison. Let’s not forget that excess of anything can be harmful. Let’s take the example of some of our traditional sweets like rasgulla, halwas, kheer etc. These contain an equal or even more amount of sugar compared to colas, but we don’t get to really read the harmful effects of them on our health. The question being, why only target colas? Colas have been existent for over a century now, with people of all ages consuming them. But have we ever heard or read about people dying due to consumption of colas? Colas also contain caffeine and added colours as pointed out by the writer, but so does coffee, a staple drink especially in southern India. Enjoy your cola, but do not indulge yourself. Simple.
