Malaise of society

A valid question is raised by Vimala Ramchandran in her article “Put them back on track” (Magazine Agust 9). The ‘Right to Education Act’ ensures school for the 6-14year children all right but what about those who can not proceed beyond the age of 14? The under-privileged can opt for vocational courses for their living and learn as well. As suggested by the author, philanthropists, national and international NGOs may also come into the picture for the amelioration of such juveniles.

The article made interesting reading. The Centre should issues guidelines for making education/going to school for children below 12 years compulsory and extend wide media coverage on lack of education.

Besides financial incentives for education should be given. Inculcating education just by enacting laws like the education bill would otherwise be a far sighted dream.

R. Sekar,

Visakhapatnam

A commendable article that focusses on an important issue of dropouts. Education is very necessary but continuity is even more important. The most appreciable aspects were the references to positive spiral and real life education. When a person in need finds material gain it becomes important to them. So, education must be inspiring not frustrating and withdrawing.

Look at the picture along with the article. The slide is made of iron tubes: rusted, broken and dangerously sharp. The girl is trying to negotiate it with her two shaky feet. How callous are school authorities!

Quiet but effective

Apropos Kalpana Sharma’s “Power Dressing”, the success of women in power is mainly due to their ability, hard work and skills. They do as much work as men to reach positions of power. The way Hilary Clinton’s looks and dresses are hotly debated in the media defies logic or reason. In this context the quiet, but, effective, manner in which the Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar steered the proceedings must be commended.

The article made interesting reading. From time immemorial we have admired the attire of beautiful women from Cleopatra down to Marilyn Monroe and made critical analysis. There is an old adage that “while we eat for ourselves ,we dress for others”. We may look at the various comments in a lighter vein only if these reports are innocuous and not malicious.

Timely

The article `It is time to act' by Prof. S.C. Gulati (Magazine Aug. 9) is timely. If concerted efforts are not taken immediately to arrest the alarming growth of population, it will sound the death knell. Population control measures should be given utmost priority. Voluntary organisations should play a vital role to educate our people to adapt themselves to the changed situation and follow family planning programmes. If corrective action is not taken immediately, population explosion will threaten the country outstripping the means of subsistence.

Nemani Vivekananda Rao,

Hyderabad

Developmental efforts since independence have failed because of rampant corruption and inefficiency prevalent in our country. Lack of both sufficient development and education have led to ignorance and increased child mortality which in turn has led to decreased success of the family planning programme. Countries like Japan and Indonesia have higher density of population than India but better social development indices. To attribute most of our failures as a nation to population growth is sweeping things under the carpet.
