Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin really!
IT'S THREE months since Sony went to town with "Naam Gum Jayega", supposedly to resurrect channel's fortunes after Madhuri Dixit failed to charm the gullible out of the company of bahus. Having achieved their target, the channel is back replacing another lost cause with "Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin" on air since this past Monday. According to Sunil Lulla, the suave Executive Vice President Sony Entertainment Television the new show is the pincer attack into the hearts of middle class India. "Adapted from the world famous series `Yo Soy Betty La Fea', the series will challenge the established definition of beauty being purely external. It reflects the hopes, aspirations and values of the average Indian girl represented by Jasmeet Walia or Jassi out to make a mark for themselves in contemporary, emerging India."
You can't foul the executive on rationale but haven't we seen the same middle class dreams for the happening fashion world from the eyes of Annie Thomas in "Khwahish" only a few years back in original and since then as a repeat in almost every slot. Sunil feigns ignorance, as Sony was not his product then but Kunal Das Gupta, CEO Sony, accepts the similarity angle. He avers, "Mounting is poles apart. The budget and star cast is different and of course the publicity is unique." Indeed, poster less campaign has not been seen in Indian TV industry with the lead actress kept under wraps till the premier.
With Sony, Apurva Agnihotri is also facing the litmus on Idiot Box as the Casanova boss of Jassi. But here again he is more of a support to the lead character as in his big screen debut "Pardes", which failed to provide him any firmament in Bollywood. "See, without Armaan Suri, the character I am playing, Jassi could not be complete." Same old hopes paving the way for same old explanations!
Giving Apurva company will be scheming Rakshanda Khan as his business partner working to remove the former from the latter and Parmeet Sethi as the friend and mentor of Apurva in his usual indulgent flirt act. "I won't call my character as grey. Real is the word that defines Mallika better. I didn't want to move beyond anchor but when Sony offered me a role in `Kya Hadsa Kya Haqeeqat', I found it interesting. Fortunately, the serial became a hit and my character was appreciated so when I was approached for Jassi, I couldn't refuse Kunalji's offer for this five-days-a-week series," says Rakshanda.
Considering Sony's penchant for living up to the names of its serials, one hopes that Jassi doesn't end up untraced by the remote signals.
