Arriving Chupke Se

Masumi.

INNOCENCE HAS its own charm. A quick rendezvous with upcoming actress Masumi is proof enough to corroborate this. With such an innocent-sounding name and oodles of childlike expressions, she definitely has her own ways. No wonder, she makes her debut into the cine world so stealthily, in the film "Chupke Se". A supposedly comical love story directed by Shona Urvashi, it is being promoted as a merry-go-round of madness and mayhem. " I play a 16-year-old, bratty, effervescent, middle-class suburban girl who wants to be famous", says Masumi, who is the romantic lead opposite Zulfi Syed. She yearns for fame but only manages to be at the wrong place at the right time in her search and everything happens rather... . Chupke Se. Serendipity, as highlighted in this Bollywood flick, however, is not her forte. Roles in "Thoda Hai, Thode Ki Zaroorat Hai", "Suhana Safar", "Banegi Apni Baat" and numerous ad campaigns such as "Rexona Spray" and "Kingfisher" were stepping-stones to the world of films. Add to that years of theatre and Bharatnatyam and you know why one feels so. Surprisingly, Masumi herself does not rule out the role of luck entirely, even though she makes no bones about the fact that the director of the film is her sister.

" Shooting for the film was real fun. All of us being such food lovers, we used to bring different kinds of `Biryani' to the sets. So in the end we had tasted biryanis of all sorts, from the traditional Hyderabadi Biryani,

some sort of Sindhi one and believe me even a Madrasi-type biryani". Sounds delectable, but it also spells fat. Doesn't it? Not so in her case. No layers of fat for her and she thanks God for it.

Talking of layers, she wants to add some - of a different kind though. She wants to add layers to her characters which she believes can be done through constant education and choosing different kinds of roles. It is anybody's guess then why she chose films like "Miya Maqbool", an adaptation of Macbeth, albeit with a Muslim-based character and "Padmashree Laloo Prasad Yadav", where she plays the role of a charming, sensuous girl who knows how to get the answer yes without even asking a question. Also in her kitty are English films by the names of "Gate to Heaven" and "1:1.6", the former being a love story between an Indian girl and a Russian guy, with a political touch to the film.

Layers, of course only time can add, but right now one wishes that her debut film does not make an early exit -- `Chupke Se'.
