Three interesting film soundtrack albums are out.
|
THE INDIAN music scene is going through a transition period with film composers trying their hand at making music for non-film albums, as Indipop artistes successfully croon for `filmi' numbers.
Three film albums were released in the market last week. Two of them reflect niche films, and one has an array of music directors putting their heads together.
Kaizad Gustad's Boom has been in the news for many reasons (mostly wrong), ranging from star-cast to censorship hurdles. But the music album Boom (Sony Music; cassette; Rs. 65) has enthralled movie-lovers. The album, "inspired by the movie", usually a mark of Hollywood movie soundtracks, features big names such as Talvin Singh and Sandeep Chowta.
The title track has a unique groove with Ila Arun's vocals, and tabla and percussion guru, Tavlin Singh's compositions. The next track is by artiste Panjabi MC. His "Mundiyan To Bach Ke" stormed the world charts by reaching number five in the U.K., and number one, in Italy, and Germany. The song, incorporated in the theme of the "Nightrider" series, is part of the soundtrack of Boom. Another track, hugely popular, is the "bhangra mix" of Groove Armada's popular club hit, "I See You Baby". Hardcore couch potatoes would remember this to be the title music for Channel V's promo, "Club V". The Boom version throws in Hindi and Punjabi vocals between the original tune, giving a fusion-like feel.

The second soundtrack album, which is likely to catch your attention, is Mumbai Matinee (Times Music: cassette: Rs. 55), a story of a middle-aged man falling in love with two young women at the same time. The soundtrack has music by Anand Raaj Anand, a Hindi film regular, accompanied by Farhad Wadia who has composed a few soothing English numbers. The vocalists are mostly Indipop artists who have made it big in recent times Sashwati ("Kaliyon Ka Chaman"), Kunal Ganjawala ("Bindu Re Bindu"), and Shaan. The catchy "Loot Gaye" is up the charts and the remix version of the evergreen "Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost", by DJ Na'Ryan, is good.

Khel is a soon-to-be-released film starring Sunil Shetty, Celina Jaitley, and Ajay Jadeja (Oh yes! this isn't a printing goof-up!). The composer, Dude's Music Company, makes the album interesting. Aimed at "nurturing fresh music talent from the country", music in Khel (Times Music: cassette: Rs. 55) features Babbu Mann, who specialises in Bhangra, and Punjabi folk music, and Daboo Malik, who has composed music for films such as Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam, and Tumko Na Bhool Payenge. The jumpy "Sharrata", rendered by Sukhwinder Singh, and Shaan's, "Chori Chori" stand out. The albums have something new to offer though they are film soundtracks.
