Jewels GALORE

A wide range of hand-made jewellery and pearl strands are on display at "Jewel expo"

IT'S EXHIBITION time yet again at Poompuhar, the sales showroom of the Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation.

This time around the expo is for those who are keen to add to their collection of jewellery.

Like in any other exhibition of its kind, all you get to see are anklets, bracelets, necklaces, bangles, earrings, beads and the like. But, the difference lies in the material used.

Crystal, oxidised silver and fibre have been worked upon to create artistic-looking pieces, but with an eye on the purse.

"The expo showcases fashionable, fancy jewellery for the middle income group," says P Mohamed Ali, Manager of Poompuhar.

Pearls and jewellery form the bulk of the exhibits. On display are some fine hand-made jewellery laden with semi-precious stones from Hyderabad, Machlipatnam and Jaipur and panchaloha jewellery, pearl and coral strands, spadiga malas and temple jewellery.

Strands and bangles seemed to be the favourites, with people looking to buy them in all enthusiasm. The reason for this eagerness was all too visible.

The simple looking bangles were embedded with semi-precious stones to lend them a rich look.

Lingams, beads, pyramids and a whole lot of other pieces made of crystal arrested the visitors' eyes.

One-gram gold articles are yet another attraction. These pieces made of silver, copper and brass are given a `golden touch'.

The gold plating makes them look like any other jewellery made of gold. "All the items on display are hand-made. The expo has been organised to provide support and encouragement to artisans," Mr. Ali says.

Semi-precious stones too are in abundant display, along side artistically designed strands made using colourful beads.

For those who believe in luck, there are `birth stones' of various hues.

There is even a board that displays the kind of stone that you should buy depending on your sun sign and date of birth.

The exhibition is on till September 17.
