Block-printed saris, salwar kameez

Suryakala, a designer wear outlet at Killipalam, specialises in block-printed saris and salwar kameez.

THINGS SEEM to be looking up as far as designer wear for women in the city is concerned. There is a sigh of relief on not having to pick up the usual Kancheevarams and Pochampallis. Exclusive boutiques that stock saris and salwar kameez from various parts of the country ensure that shopping becomes the exhilarating experience it is meant to be.

Suryakala, a designer wear outlet at Killipalam, specialises in block-printed saris and salwar kameez. The range of materials used is vast - right from superknit Rajasthani Kotas to raw silks. But the common thread running through them is block printing.

Superknit Kota saris with block prints on them are priced at Rs. 850. Badla work done on the body of the sari adds to the beauty. These come with block-printed silk blouses to match.

Some saris have kadi prints on them as well. Unlike material that has block prints on it, the one with kadi prints does not require processing.

Saris with batik work, done using wax, can also be picked up at Suryakala. These look different from the usual batiks and are priced at Rs. 850.

Then, there are saris called Ganga Jamuna, in which the two borders of the sari have the same prints but in different colours. So, all you need to do is simply reverse it and wear it one more time.

Saris in three different colours that run across its length and even on to the pallu are worth a dekko. These are also priced at Rs. 850.

Block-printed saris with gold embroidery on the prints and badla work on the body have an elegant look. These are priced at Rs. 1,300.

Raw silk saris with network, cutwork and embroidery on the border are priced at Rs. 1,950. Badla work all over the body gives that touch of finesse. Pure silk saris with a resplendent tussar silk pallu and cutwork and scalloping on it are priced at Rs. 2,900. Cotton saris with elaborate block printed pallus and mirror work on the body cost Rs. 550. These come complete with blouses that have block-printed sleeves.

Silk saris with attached tissue are the pick of Suryakala. These are block and kadi printed, embroidered with gold thread and sequined. Pure silk saris with organza attached to the pallu, silver and gold thread embroidery, complete with mirror work are priced at Rs. 2,500. Silk saris with block print, embroidery and a border that is binded with crushed tissue cost Rs. 2,2,50. Crepe saris with block prints, embroidery and sequins come for Rs. 2,500. Georgette saris with borders in antique finish and zardozi and gold foil work on them are priced at Rs. 2,300. A Tanjoi organza sari with a self print and silver threadwork and mirrorwork also cost Rs. 1,200.

Suryakala stocks Chettinad cottons that have block prints or kadi prints on them, cotton silks that are woven on order, and Rasipuram saris that are in cotton, but have silk borders.

Salwar kameez too can be found at the shop. Mangalagiri dress material costs between Rs. 800 and Rs. 1,000. Block, printed and vegetable-dyed cottons, spun salwar and kameez material teamed with chiffon dupattas, batik sets, Bagalpur cottons with crushed dupattas, tussar cottons and a host of other combinations can be found there.
