Art essentials

Breathtaking dagger thrust display.

KALARIPAYATTU BEGINS with a salutation ritual to the accompaniment of a verse by the guru, the beat of the drum and the blowing of the conch.

* The ritual is extremely aesthetic where the body movements culminate in touching the earth (ground) with bowed neck and hands in the form of a salute to mother earth.

* An oil massage followed by a fresh bath is a mandatory prelude to get set and go. The body (skin) is cleansed of physical impurities, toned and ready to mould itself into any stance and shape, it is said.

* Nothing to beat Keralites in baths. Equipped with excess water, a post-exercise bath is a matter of routine.

* The dress code is a simple veshti (loin cloth) tightly wound round the waist and thighs leaving the rest of the limbs and torso entirely bare for men while women put on a sports banian.
